The iconic Game Boy Advance SP remains one of the most revered designs in portable gaming history, but finding an original unit in pristine condition today has become an expensive hassle. The Anbernic RG SP solves that problem by reviving the beloved folding form factor at an accessible price point, combining authentic early-2000s nostalgia with modern emulation hardware capable of running far more than just 16-bit cartridges.
At the core of the device is the Allwinner H700 quad-core processor paired with 1GB of RAM, a proven budget configuration that provides enough headroom to push past classic Nintendo libraries into fifth-generation 3D consoles. Better yet, the clamshell shell does not just mimic the retro aesthetic—it delivers modern utility with a built-in magnetic sensor that automatically suspends and resumes your gameplay whenever you snap the lid shut.
- Iconic clamshell ergonomics: Delivers authentic GBA SP styling complete with clicky dome switches, solid hinge tension, and natural screen protection that eliminates the need for a separate travel case.
- Solid low-end emulation: Powers through 8-bit, 16-bit, and PlayStation 1 games at full speed, with respectable performance on select Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, and lighter PSP titles.
- Essential modern features: Packs a crisp 3.5-inch 640×480 IPS display, dual-band Wi-Fi for RetroAchievements, Bluetooth controller connectivity, and mini-HDMI out for big-screen gaming.
- Smart power management: The functional sleep-wake lid switch makes it effortless to jump in and out of quick play sessions during commutes without draining the battery.
Bottom line: If you want a pocketable, sub-$70 retro handheld that safely rides in your pocket without a case while delivering flawless PS1 and GBA playback, the Anbernic RG SP is a must-buy for budget gaming enthusiasts.
