With modern game consoles creeping up in price and locking basic multiplayer features behind recurring subscription fees, assembling a compact living room PC is quickly becoming the smarter financial play. By combining readily available budget desktop parts with SteamOS, gamers can replicate the streamlined, controller-driven experience of a traditional console without the proprietary hardware markups or software fees.
This build centers on the AMD Ryzen 5 5600 processor paired with the AMD Radeon RX 6600 graphics card—a legendary budget combination for solid 1080p and entry 1440p performance. Because both components run on AMD architecture, they offer native, out-of-the-box compatibility with Linux-based SteamOS, saving you the cost of a Windows license while providing smooth system navigation and reliable driver support.
- Console-Class Performance on a Budget: The Ryzen 5 5600 and Radeon RX 6600 pairing delivers high-framerate 1080p gaming across modern AAA titles without requiring top-tier hardware pricing.
- Native SteamOS Integration: Utilizing an all-AMD platform ensures seamless SteamOS compatibility, giving you the instant-on, TV-friendly Big Picture interface designed for couch play.
- True Small Form Factor Design: Built inside a compact SFF chassis, the system easily fits onto media consoles, TV stands, or small desks where traditional mid-tower cases are too bulky.
- Long-Term Upgradability: Unlike fixed-spec consoles, standard desktop components allow you to swap in cheaper storage upgrades, more RAM, or a faster graphics card down the road.
Bottom line: If you want to bypass soaring console prices and recurring online access fees, this compact SteamOS rig is an ideal project for budget-conscious gamers looking for a dedicated living room machine that can leverage an existing PC game library.
